PorterHouse: first visit by findmyfood

We had never been to Mad Jacks since the launch of findmyfood so we felt our visit to PorterHouse last week was mandatory.

It became a long story short really: A fantastic experience from the moment we entered the building to the moment we left. As usual, and being the same with most restaurants, there were a few minor details which we will pick out in this small but worth-while review, but overall it was one of the best meals we had had in a long time.

Appetisers

They weren’t on the menu, but we asked for some olives and all the usual ‘trimmings’ that normally accompany them. Wow! They came, we ate and we were very pleased. A very courteous waiter from the start delivered the appetisters to our table whilst we were seated just past the bar (at the back on the right in the ‘L shaped’ seating amenity). Olives, oils, spreads, vinegars and cocktail sticks to polish it all off.

Starters

We felt slightly rushed as the waiter informed us that the only starter was ready and we hadn’t finished our appetisers. He also asked us if we’d like to come to the main table for the starter which meant moving everything (including drinks) into another room, but to be fair to him, he did all that for us. Smoked Salmon – Lime & Chive Crème Fraîche, Cucumber & Cherry Tomato Salad. Presentation was spot on and the taste and look and feel of the dish wasn’t that far behind.

Mains

The four mains we ordered were: Spiced Lamb Kofta Burger – Tzatziki, Charred Halloumi, Sliced Tomato, Rocket Salad and Chunky Chips ** 8oz Sirloin – Chunky Chips, Vine Tomatoes and Watercress with Bernaise ** Beer Battered Cod Fillet – Hand Cut Chips, Pea Puree, Tartar Sauce & a Lemon Wedge (2)

The Tzatziki worked beautifully with the Spiced Lamb because it complimented it’s firey texture – It’s not something I would usually eat (spicy foods) but it was a real taste sensation. The chunky chips were well cooked as they were fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside; textbook chip cooking.

There weren’t too many, which is always good as many people feel obliged to eat them and over fill themselves which always leave you bloated and feeling uncomfortable at the end of the evening – Portion size was brilliantly judged.

Throughout our first experience at PorterHouse, the waiter was really helpful and he provided everything we required to make our meal as tasty as we could possible want it. He informed me that the Lamb Kofta Burger came a little pink in the middle which was a nice touch because a lot of places would have just served it and left me to eat it and wouldn’t have been bothered about what I thought. The only downside was when he repeatedly asked us if everything was ok and / or if we needed anything else or any more drinks. We appreciated he may have been on some sort of commission and / or bonus with the volume of drinks that he sold to us but it did become a little frustrating and annoying.

That little tiny problem aside, we had a fantastic meal. The whole experience counts when we dine out and it all adds up if there is something bad (and good) to the final verdict being higher and potentially lower. findmyfood are rating this visit an 8/10.
